My thoughts on Fated Immortals...
Let me just say, I've had a phenomenal year of reading GREAT books! So with starting out this review I'm not quite sure how to say this.
Well, I'll start with the positives:
- The plot: The whole storyline was super original. Not once have I happened upon a book with a similar storyline. So props there.
- Setting: I loved the setting. When I found out this book takes place in Maine AND England I was super stoked! I'm not sure what it is but I just love stories set in Maine and England. Best combination ever!
- The Protagonist is Immortal: I have a thing for books centering on Immortals or anything paranormal.
- I loved how myths & legends were interwoven into the storyline. I must say, the author did a great job with this part. I really enjoyed learning about the history of Immortals and Soul-Immortals. This was probably the most interesting thing I took from the whole story.
Now on to what I didn't like:
- The storyline moved too slow: While the plot was very original and intriguing, I got bored while reading. My interest didn't get piqued until around 39% in, but only lasted until about 45% then I got bored again. Once I was about 80% in the action picked up again.
- Character development: I definitely felt like the characters were missing something. It's hard for me to explain but I felt disconnected from every character in the book, besides Leah. Near the very end there is a pretty big turning point and that's when Leah pulled me in. I was also able to connect with Artagan. I love seeing why a villain is just that, a villain. Near the last 10% we get to see a bit into his life. I'd actually like to read a book based in Artagan's POV.
Overall this could be an excellent story. I just wish I was able to connect more with the characters in this one and the pacing was a bit slow in the first half of the book. I don't think I'd recommend this one. But I would read this author's other books.
Great review, Miranda! I am sorry that this book wasn't more enjoyable. I do agree with you that a slow moving plot can really ruin a story. I also have to agree that I really like to see a lot of depth in the characters. I hope that you enjoy your next read a little more!
