An endless love, for an endless price.

Jack’s immortality is exposed when he prevents a liquor store heist, forcing him to flee to protect his secret—a secret not even he understands. But when he meets Leah Winters—a mirror image of his decades-lost love, Lydia—his very soul is laid bare. He begins to question his sanity. Is she real, and if so, what does that mean for Jack and his secret?

Jack’s not the only mystery man in town. A stranger named Artagan hints at knowledge Jack is desperate to possess. But can he trust Artagan, or does the dark newcomer harbor deadly secrets of his own?

As Jack’s bond with Leah grows, so does the danger to her life. Jack must discover just how much he is willing to risk in order to save the woman he already lost once.

My thoughts on Fated Immortals...

Let me just say, I've had a phenomenal year of reading GREAT books! So with starting out this review I'm not quite sure how to say this.

Well, I'll start with the positives:

  1. The plot: The whole storyline was super original. Not once have I happened upon a book with a similar storyline. So props there.
  2. Setting: I loved the setting. When I found out this book takes place in Maine AND England I was super stoked! I'm not sure what it is but I just love stories set in Maine and England. Best combination ever!
  3. The Protagonist is Immortal: I have a thing for books centering on Immortals or anything paranormal.
  4. I loved how myths & legends were interwoven into the storyline. I must say, the author did a great job with this part. I really enjoyed learning about the history of Immortals and Soul-Immortals. This was probably the most interesting thing I took from the whole story.
Now on to what I didn't like:
  1. The storyline moved too slow: While the plot was very original and intriguing, I got bored while reading. My interest didn't get piqued until around 39% in, but only lasted until about 45% then I got bored again. Once I was about 80% in the action picked up again.
  2. Character development: I definitely felt like the characters were missing something. It's hard for me to explain but I felt disconnected from every character in the book, besides Leah. Near the very end there is a pretty big turning point and that's when Leah pulled me in. I was also able to connect with Artagan. I love seeing why a villain is just that, a villain. Near the last 10% we get to see a bit into his life. I'd actually like to read a book based in Artagan's POV.
Overall this could be an excellent story. I just wish I was able to connect more with the characters in this one and the pacing was a bit slow in the first half of the book. I don't think I'd recommend this one. But I would read this author's other books.

Comments

  1. Great review, Miranda! I am sorry that this book wasn't more enjoyable. I do agree with you that a slow moving plot can really ruin a story. I also have to agree that I really like to see a lot of depth in the characters. I hope that you enjoy your next read a little more!
